Ellen Melville Centre - 60 Years
The Ellen Melville Centre turns 60 years old this week. The centre was opened by then-Mayor Sir Dove Myer-Robinson. Named after Ellen Melville, she was the first female to practice law and serve as a Councillor in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland. Ellen suggested that Auckland required a hall for women’s societies and serve as a memorial to pioneer women.
Tibor Donner designed the project, but it wasn't completed until 1962 due to the war. This was after Ellen’s death in 1946. It’s a beautiful example of mid century architecture right in the heart of the city. With the addition of Freyberg Place connected to the centre it’s become a well used community space for all to enjoy.
