Metita
by Murray Crane
Navigating Auckland's saturated restaurant scene can easily lead to skepticism regarding new establishments, which frequently seem to ride the wave of biased reviews and superficial social media hype. Selecting something new poses a risk and quite often results in disappointment.
Fortunately, I have the privilege of annually gathering with friends deeply rooted in the restaurant industry for a night of adventurous dining. This year, our choice was Metita, and it proved to be a stroke of genius. Sky City dining options like Fed, Depot, and more recently Cassia are known for their consistency, Metita stands out as a beacon of innovation and uniqueness. It's a refreshing addition to Auckland's dining scene, offering an adult, international ambiance that truly reflects our city's rich cultural diversity.
Metita draws its culinary inspiration from Michael Meredith's Samoan heritage, with a menu emphasizing sustainably sourced seafood and fresh local produce. “Metita represents a fusion of my Pacific background, culinary journey, and love for fresh, seasonal tastes,” Michael explains. The restaurant is named in honor of his late mother, Metita, reflecting the deep personal connection and the culinary passion she instilled in him.
In defiance of the current cost of living pressures, I suggest economizing for as long as it practically takes to afford a night at Metita. It's an experience that promises to be unforgettable.
