No Free Man
On at the Gus Fisher Gallery is “No Free Man”. Curated by Dr Erin Griffey with powerful imagery from Photographer Nigel Swinn focussing on the faces of Teina Pora, Louise Nicholas and four prisoners.
Organised in line with the 800th anniversary of the signing of Magna Carta, it celebrates the legacy of this document in New Zealand law.
The Magna Carta is one of the most celebrated documents in Western history and its 39th clause is still a part of British law.
It states; “No free man shall be seized or imprisoned, or stripped of his rughts or possessions, or outlawed or exiled, or deprived of his standing in any other way, nor will we proceed with force against him, or send others to do so, except by the lawful judgement of his equals or by the law of the land.”
Obviously it’s a bit of a work in progress.
