The Gentlemen
by Murray Crane
"The Gentlemen," a thrilling action-comedy series on Netflix, is a spin-off of Guy Ritchie's 2019 film of the same name.
The show follows Edward Horniman, who unexpectedly inherits his father's estate and the title of Duke of Halstead after his father's will and testament are read. Edward soon discovers that the land is now part of a marijuana-growing empire run by the dangerous and ruthless Susie Glass.
Forced to navigate a dangerous world of unusual characters to protect his home and life, Edward must use all his wits and resources to outsmart his adversaries and survive.
Much like his earlier work, Ritchie draws inspiration from themes such as boxing, gypsies, war, shotguns, beautiful and slightly dangerous female characters, gentlemen's clubs, bespoke tailoring, expensive wine and cigars, and luxurious timepieces.
Personally enjoying these elements, I found the show to be a joyful experience. The addition of smart tailoring and LouLou Bontemps' cloth choices contributed to a sartorially acceptable viewing experience.
LouLou Bontemps served as the lead costume designer, and the official soundtrack was composed by Christopher Benstead, who previously worked with Ritchie on films like "The Covenant" and "Wrath of Man." The soundtrack is now available for streaming and download on various platforms, including Spotify.
The Gentlemen is a mad, fast-paced, action-packed joy ride. I would sum it up as a darkly comic and satirical take on the world of organized crime with an aristocratic twist.
Overall, the show is well worth watching.
